Day 32 - Rolla to Eureka

Last night I crossed the parking lot to a BarBQ place.  I got the 3 meat smapler and it was pretty good. I took the waiters advice on the appetizer ... some sort of BBQ chicken nachos ... should have gotten something else.  The beer I ordered was pretty much undrinkable.
Can I please get out of Missouri? Bad roads, mean drivers and without question the worst drivers in the country.  My favorite thing about Missouri, though, is the road kill.  Kansas may have been the stepped in poop state, but Missouri is the road kill state.  That would be good on the license plates: Missouri The Road Kill State.

There is more road kill on the shoulders ... no ... there are no shoulders here ... on the road than you can beleive.  The smell of rotting flesh makes me gag about once a kilometer.  I have seen at least a dozen armadillo carcases ... who knew they were even in Missouri. There must be a lot of them here or they travel a long way to commit suiside.  Armadillo smells extra bad by the way.

I've seen lots of turtles of all sizes including some really big ones.  Exploded like watermelons.

Yuck ... the road kill state.

Today did not even tease me with a nice morning.  Pretty much as soon as I started riding, it started raining.  Pretty hard and I got pretty wet.  It did keep the heat down.  You don't notice much when it is raining and you don't take many pictures.

At this point I would not recommend the Route 66, at least through Missouri, to anyone.  Most people probably figured that out and is the reason I have only seen one cyclist.  A lot of time is spent riding beside Intersate 44.  For some reason the fact that there is an interstate 40 feet away doesn't slow people down on the shoulderless crap road I'm stuck on.
I got a sandwich in Cuba and some Mexican (sort of) food in Pacific.

Lots of ups and downs all day ... for the numbers people 1100m of climbing which will tire you out.  The roads were pretty bad for the most part but magically north of US50 a big wide shoulder appeared and stayed most of the rest of the way.  To that point in Missouri anytime they bothered with a shoulder that made it unridable with rumble strips.  Rumble strips are great for drunks but bad for bikes.

Day 42 - Imlay City to San Francisco

Last night's tire patching was looking good in the morning.  I think with a stiffer material and better glue just about any damage to a ...
