I took it realy easy and kept my heart rate under 110. That got me around 25km/hr on the flats and I made good time. I was going to be in Middlegate Station at 75km - the only place to get food before Austin - before 9. I was in sight of the buildings ... which doesn't mean much in Nevada! ... when I saw a cyclist at the side of the road.
This guy was bikepacking a route from Utah to Tahoe that kind of parralled US50.
Along the road at various times were these little hoppy things. Wasn't sure what they were. At the hotel the lady said they were called Mormon Crickets. Biblical plague type of stuff.
Today I managed my energy and fluids well and came in to Austin pretty strong. Just under 180km ... about 110 miles.Got to the hotel about 3 and there is no food - except at the gas station - in this whole town. This is my dinner.
This is what I have for breakfast and to get me all the way to Eureka 113km away.
About 30km before Austin I stopped to chat to father/son riders with their car support. I will be likely seeing them over the next few days as there are no other places to stop. At my hotel is a another brother/sister couple Natalie and Zach that will also be following the same routes over the next few days.
